interior shot

Recently I shot a bunch of office interiors during a 2 hour span in the early morning before everyone came in.  This shot of the reception lounge was my favorite.  It has a mixture of nostalgic (like early 70's) and  a futuristic feel to it.

Sakura Sling camera strap

As I was striding through Isetan department store in Shinjuku today, I saw this beautiful camera strap that looks like a scarf.  It's called the "Sakura Sling," named after the woman who invented this ingenious item.  I thought I've seen everything there is to see in photographic accessories, but this one is special.  It's fashionable, and it's quite functional as it lightens the weight of the camera and has a secret pocket to stash things.  Apparently they are looking for a way to market this globally.

Fun for everyone

I found this mural where I couldn't resist posing a CFO and CEO  from a gas company in front of it just for fun. And did they have fun.  One of the things I've always felt is that you have to make it fun for your subjects to have their pictures taken by getting them involved.

Spring Portraits in Japan

Last week's beautiful cherry blossoms were all done leaving bare trees but this week a different variety has come to full bloom thus enabling me to fulfill the request of a traveller who wanted to have her pictures taken with the blossoms.

Sakura season has arrived in Japan

It's that time of the year where everyone gets to enjoy the beauty of this country.  In recent years the increase with inbound tourists from abroad has made cherry blossom viewing very crowded.  I see lots of Chinese couples in wedding dresses taking their wedding / engagement photos with a self timer that sometimes I feel like offering my assistance to push the shutter for them.

composition, timing, and patience pays off

I was taking some pictures of a beautiful cherry blossom tree with my iPhone. and then came the intruders. But with the right timing, these intruders gave life to the what would've been an ordinary picture.  Not a second too early or too late, there's just one moment when it happens.

caught this beautiful rainbow near my house with an iPhone

what goes in the process determines the outcome.

Had a very enjoyable early morning shoot with a famous CFO.  Not only was she very beautiful but down to earth and very friendly.  But I'm glad I caught her strength in this shot.
This was one case where I thought about how much photoshop should be used on a person.  Not that she needed any, but women here in Japan always ask me to take out the wrinkles, spots and make them appear thin.  The problem is that you can do too much these days to the point where you end up with a different person by the time you're done.  Yesterday was a reminder that sometimes you need to leave things as it is to convey the power of a real person.
In the film days, we couldn't retouch easily so we did our best with lighting and backgrounds to get the best shot.  These days, we often figure we can fix things later and not be so concerned about the picture taking process.  I think that's the problem with music these days.  You don't hear enough of the great musicianship that you heard in the 70's and 80's.  Too much tampering in the studio doesn't turn shit into gold.

yoga poses in Japan

Last month I had an interesting request from a Chinese gentleman who asked to have his portraits taken with the blooming cherry blossoms in a poetic way.  This month I had a request by a French Yoga instructor who wished to have portraits of her and her daughter in yoga poses taken with a shrine/temple or japanese garden background.  We were fortunate to do this very early in the morning as, by 9am the area was flooded with tourists.
