I'm always having to look for a suitable background to make portraits on the spot. This university professor of psychology was photographed at a snack area but I like how the lines converge behind him and the fact that it's monochromatic forming a contrast where the subject stands out.

Last of the Sakura

 

This year has been very warm and Spring has come early to Japan.  I think everything is running about 2 weeks earlier than usual, and I already feel May weather in the air.  Last weekend I took a hike at a place called "Tama Shinrin Kagakuen."  It translates to something like Tama Forrest Science Park.  Apparently there are 500 species of sakura (cherry blossoms) trees there.  Very nice hike, and I guess not many people are aware of the place so it's a great place to go during the pandemic.  Nearby there's also the burial site of the Taisho and Showa emperors along with their empress.  It's like visiting Meiji Shrine, very peaceful, well kept and beautiful, relaxing.  Highly recommended.  Nearest station is Takao, just before you hit Mt. Takao.

The cherry blossoms are in full bloom this week at Tokyo, earlier than usual due to warm weather.

Taking safe measures against covid-19

Please feel comfortable that we do everything in our part to make the photo session safe.  Since most modern offices do not have windows that open, we make sure that the air ventilation for the conference rooms are adequate by using circulator fans if necessary. Hand sanitizers are on hand at the table, and we use a secondary display for our clients to check the images from a social distance.

 

Reached my 264th daily image upload today

 

My "one new photo a day" upload to instagram has reached the 264th image today.  It's about time I'm finding myself and showing images I create for me and to those who might enjoy looking at them.

All images are new shot for this project with my iPhone (currently I use the 11 Pro).  No stock photo from years ago.

The tree with a big heart

This very unique tree stands in a vacant lot near my house.  The shape of the tree is natural and no one has tampered with it.  I don't think any one wants to because it's divine.  The tree has a big heart, and the more I stare at it I'm overwhelmed by its power.  It just gave me a thought about what I can do as a photographer during this crisis.  Starting tomorrow I will try to upload one picture everyday on my instagram in the hopes that it might make someone feel better. cherry blossoms and then snow

As the world struggles with COVID-19, the cherry blossoms are blooming beautifully in Japan as in every year.  Then comes the untimely snow but the cherry blossoms stand strong looking beautiful the next day when the snow melts.  I hope we can all be strong and withstand the virus so we can go back to enjoying our lives.

As we struggle through these difficult times, Spring arrives in Tokyo and the beauty of nature heals us, and reminds us that life goes on. 

2019 Noble Prize recipient for Chemistry Akira Yoshino

I had the pleasure of meeting and photographing Mr. Akira Yoshino, developer of the lithium ion batteries, 6 years ago for The American Engineering Academy.

 Saw Chris Botti play at the Blue Note Tokyo last weekend. Needless to say it was an incredible evening of performances by highly talented musicians. Jazz musicians are really special.

Recently I shot a bunch of office interiors during a 2 hour span in the early morning before everyone came in.  This shot of the reception lounge was my favorite.  It has a mixture of nostalgic (like early 70's) and  a futuristic feel to it.

Sakura Sling camera strap

As I was striding through Isetan department store in Shinjuku today, I saw this beautiful camera strap that looks like a scarf.  It's called the "Sakura Sling," named after the woman who invented this ingenious item.  I thought I've seen everything there is to see in photographic accessories, but this one is special.  It's fashionable, and it's quite functional as it lightens the weight of the camera and has a secret pocket to stash things.  Apparently they are looking for a way to market this globally.
