the art of tea ceremony

Koshin Kobori Soukei is the head of the Enshu school of tea ceremonies. Born in 1923, he studied japanese paintings and was sent to war at the young age of 22. After the war he was captured by the Soviets and placed in a severe forced labour camp for 4 years which broke his body. After his return to Japan, his contribution to the arts and peace through his paintings, pottery, calligraphy, and haiku has been quite significant. The Meguro museum celebrates the artist's life work and dedicaion to the field of arts. It is such an honour that he chose the portrait I have made of him as his favorite which now hangs high at the entrance of the current exhibition.
